The past winter was no exception – demand significantly exceeded supply, resulting in rising prices and delivery delays. This situation is not accidental or isolated, but rather a recurring trend influenced by several structural factors at both local and international levels.

Demand for wood pellets in Europe has grown considerably, particularly due to the transition toward renewable energy sources. Biomass, including wood pellets, is widely considered an alternative to fossil fuels, driving increased demand not only in Latvia but across the European Union. At the same time, the availability of raw materials must be considered – pellet production depends directly on by-products of the wood processing industry, such as sawdust and wood chips. Any fluctuations in the timber industry or export flows directly affect pellet production volumes.

Another important factor is export. A significant portion of pellets produced in the Baltic region is exported to countries with higher purchasing power, such as Germany, Denmark, and Italy. This creates competition between local and foreign markets, especially during periods of rising energy prices. As a result, pellet availability in the domestic market can become limited.

Considering these factors, it becomes clear that pellet purchasing must be planned in advance. Experience shows that during summer and early autumn, prices tend to be more stable and supply more reliable. In contrast, demand rises sharply at the beginning of the heating season, increasing both prices and delivery risks. Therefore, both households and businesses should plan and build reserves ahead of time.

However, availability is only part of the equation – pellet quality is equally important. Pellets on the market can vary significantly in composition and technical parameters. High-quality pellets are typically produced from clean wood without chemical additives and have low moisture and ash content. Lower-quality pellets, on the other hand, may contain impurities that reduce energy efficiency and can cause issues in heating systems.

International standards such as ENplus certification define quality requirements for pellets, including energy value, mechanical durability, and ash content. Industry data and studies indicate that using high-quality pellets can significantly reduce equipment wear and improve long-term efficiency. Therefore, supplier selection should not be based on price alone, but also on product quality and origin.

Due to market instability, more and more companies are considering producing pellets themselves. Pellet production equipment and complete production lines allow businesses to control both raw materials and final product quality, while reducing dependence on external suppliers. This is particularly relevant for wood processing companies that already have access to raw materials such as sawdust.

However, investing in pellet production equipment requires careful evaluation. Used equipment may seem financially attractive at first, but older machinery often involves higher risks – more frequent breakdowns, increased maintenance costs, and lower productivity. Additionally, spare parts for older machines may be difficult to obtain, increasing downtime risks.

Industry experience shows that the optimal solution is to choose equipment from reliable manufacturers with a known operational history and proper technical support. Modern pellet presses and production lines provide higher efficiency, more consistent quality, and lower operating costs in the long term.

Overall, pellet shortages in Latvia should no longer be viewed as a temporary issue, but rather as a recurring market trend influenced by global energy developments and local production conditions. This means that both consumers and businesses must adapt: plan purchases in advance, evaluate quality carefully, and consider long-term solutions such as in-house production.

Well-informed decisions in this field not only reduce risks but also ensure stability and efficiency in the future.

In recent years, the wood pellet market in Latvia has experienced significant fluctuations, with pellet shortages becoming increasingly common during the heating season.
